AN OLD CHICKEN COOP STORY – WORTH SHARING:
I grew up on a farm, near Teeswater, Ontario & my neighbours dad had another 100 acres down the road a few miles, in an area called the “Alps”. Great fishing spot for small brook trout. As teenagers, we got tired of pitching a tent every summer and decided to make a permanent camp site out of a chicken coop.

Luck would have it, that the next door retired neighbor had one no longer in use & it was free. Well my dad and the neigbour boys dad offered to move it for us 15 year old kids. So one day, it was loaded on a hay wagon with my dads FEL and chained down secure. We towed it up/down steel hills for a 1/4 mile & into a permanent camp site.

We bought scrap tin siding from Stanley Doors in Wingham, for a $1 / sheet and bought 30 new sheets with a bad factory bend. That went on our summer holidays and without hydro, used a Pioneer chainsaw to cut pine trees down for our bunk bed framing. Another neighbour gave us a wood stove for free. With the new steel siding & tin roof, windows went in the front with screens & shutters. Entire project took 5-6 weeks, for 3-4 for us working 5 days a week.

We even had a ski-do party there when I turned 16 (many years ago / back in mid 70′s). Just told everyone at high school on a Monday and about 40-50 teens & about 20 sled machines showed up. That week got mild, and most snow sleds had to drive partially on bare roads, in spots – but didn’t dampen any spirits.
THOSE WERE THE DAYS, back in the 70′s – WHEN YOU COULD BUILD A SMALL COTTAGE FOR 30 BUCKS !!
