Everyone, introduce yourselves! (#1 and #2) [Archive]
Guess it looks to be my turn to say Hey to all you guys and gals.
When I was about 8, we lived in Gainsville FL. There was a hatchery up the road. Every day I would go to the dumpster and try to save the chicks that were tossed out to die. The one I remember the most was named Georgia. As a young chick she would ride with me on my bike. At about 6 months of age, GEORGE, as he was now known, would sit on my handlebars, balancing himself as we rode all over town together. My dad took George to my Uncles farm to live a happy chicken life where he could crow at will. That was the only pet I ever had growning up.
My name is Melinda, I am 51. I live in a small town 40 miles NE of Dallas. Just short of the OK line. I bought my home little over 4 years ago. I only have .5 acre. 3 kids, all grown and gone.4.5 gbabies. My BF moved in two months ago with me, so we are trying to find our way together.
The first thing I did when I purchased my place is put in a 1200 gallon pond in the back yard, right off the back porch. Took me 8 months to build it. Then I started putting in flower gardens with herbs mixed in. When I bought this old place the orignal couple had done nothing more than put in a thiry one foot grape vine. THat is just behind the pond. The veg. garden is at the bottom of the north 40.
The BF and I talked about getting chickens. After the words ‘when we get the pens and coop ready’ feel out of my mouth, he bought chicks. So we are now scrammbling to get the stuff up and ready. Not to mention we both have our own ideas of how it should be. Not that either have a clue to begin with. LOL
I have two dogs Hlwa 3 yr old, a solid black chow/husky and a small terrior mix Elli, 2 yr old, three cats. Fred, Ethel and Bitsey. All rescue. Pond full of very large Koi and goldfish. THe BF has a 2 yr old collie (that will not listen, YET) And 2date, 24 chicks. The chicken yard is almost completed. Just need nesting boxes in it now. And to re-do some of the openings. Some stuff just needs to stay in your head.
We both work, not always the same days, so there is little time for us both to be out there together. Except in the evenings. So we do what we can that evening, grab a cold beer for me, a glass of wine for him. And just sit at the chicken yard watching all OUR babies just do what chickens do. They are really fun to watch.
All the help I can get is greatly appreciated.
