On the November 21, 2009 episode, Saturday Night Live parodied a group of singers and friends known for their laid back demeanor in a skit called “The Mellow Show” with Jack Johnson. Johnson, played by Andy Samberg, played the host of the mellow talk show and introduced his “partner in barefooted crime”, Dave Matthews, played by Bill Hader.

Sitting in a bamboo hut on the beach with surfboards in tow, Dave Matthews sang his new song “Chicken Panini” while his “freaky” fiddle player came out to accompany him. Then Jack introduced the next guest who “loves shoes almost as much as he loves hats”, Jason Mraz.

Jason Mraz, who was played by the guest host of the night, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, appeared in a t-shirt, torn jeans and his trademark hat. He said he had been busy “maintaining my avocado farm, making music for girls and doing a lot of scatting…Scatting is good when you’re too mellow to actually write lyrics.”

Then Jason sang his latest song, “Lookin’ Good”, to the tune of “I’m Yours.”
(Watch video below)

“I want to look good, so I went to the hat store,
I looked at a bunch of really cool fedoras
I put one on my head…
It looked great…”

The most hilarious part came when the real Dave Matthews, who was the musical guest that night, came out as Ozzy Osbourne with a surprisingly accurate English stuttering accent. He talked about how he made a transformation into mellowness and sang his new song about “taking it easy and having fun” called “I Am Tired.”

However, the song sounded more like one of Ozzy’s metal tunes which scared Dave Matthews. Ozzy responded, “What doesn’t scare Dave Matthews? I mean look at him, his stupid face and his stupid feet, his voice makes me want to throw up in my hands.”

With that remark, Jack Johnson closes out the show, saying, “Until next time, I’m Jack Johnson, saying ‘hemp necklace’.”
