Chicks Beach – Rental (Long Term) (Chesapeake, Richmond: for sale, real estate, oceanfront) – Hampton Roads area – Virginia (VA) -Chesapeake – Hampton – Newport News – Norfolk – Portsmouth – Suffolk – Virginia Beach – City
We are moving to VA in March and want to live in Chicks Beach (about a block or so from the beach). My question: Is it better to stay on the beach side of Shore Drive and how far (road wise) does Chicks Beach actually extend, as I look at rental postings and Chicks Beach to some extends all the way to the Hampton Roads Bridge.
I had heard that Ocean View is close to Chicks Beach and NOT to live there (is that the other side of the main bridge). As for finding properties….I am trying Craigslist and some local real estate agents, but I guess until you get out there its hard to judge….if anyone has any suggestions for LONG TERM real estate agents that DON’T want to try and sell me a property…please let me know.
We will be moving back overseas in (3) years, so rental only.
Budget: $1,800.00 (3) bdrm. Approx.
Thanks all
If you are looking for “Chick’s Beach”, a term often used to broadly describe the Chesapeake Bay area of north VA Beach from the eastern border of Little Creek Amphibious Base (USN) to the western edge of First Landing (Seashore) State Park, I will try to name and describe some actual neighborhoods in this area.
At the east end of this area is Cape Story By the Sea. This is predominately assorted size single family homes, with a few duplexes and duplex condos mixed in. The neighborhood is split by a multipurpose trail that leads to the state park. To the east of this area is state park and Fort Story Army base until you reach the Northend of the oceanfront (Atlantic).
As you head west you’ll see a stretch of primarily newer condos on and near the bay. Lynnhaven Beach, Windrose Townhomes, Mariners Mark, Sandspur Villas, to name a few. There are a few highrise condos and a hotel on the bay in this area. It is like this until the Lesner Bridge at Lynnhaven Inlet. There are many nice local restaurants and marinas in this vicinity, along with a Starbucks.
Ocean Park is just west of the bridge and has alot of newer 2 unit condos, older beach cottages and some smaller townhomes (Mariners’ Landing). The city boat launch facility is also here. Then you blend into Pelican Dunes / Aeries on the Bay (a mix of homes, condos, and townhomes), and Baylake Pines (single family beach community).
Next you will be in Chesapeake Beach, or what I refer to as Chick’s Beach Proper. This is a large neighborhood with all types of housing, bisected by route 13 which is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to the Eastern Shore of VA. This is the northwest corner of the city and it borders the base.
Just about anywhere described above is within walking distance to the Bay. I manage 12 or 13 yearly rental properties mainly in the Shore Drive cooridor. It is a great place to live. Your budget amount is fine for a 3 bedroom. A newer townhome or condo, or older home, within walking distance to the bay can easily be found in this price range.
Hope this helps,
Mark
